Chipped Teeth

Avulsed Teeth
The most severe variety of dental trauma short of a broken jaw, an “avulsed” tooth is one that has been knocked right out of its socket. In this case, time is of the essence. Pick the tooth up by its crown or chewing surface, avoiding the root, and carefully rinse it—don’t scrub—with water. If possible, place the tooth gently back in the socket and get to a dentist as soon as possible.
If you can’t put the tooth back in the socket, keep it moist in a glass of milk or slightly salted water. You can also put the tooth in your mouth between your cheek and gum. Just be careful not to swallow it.
Your dentist will reinsert the tooth if necessary and stabilize it with a splint for a week or two. If the tooth shows signs of infection or root damage during or after that time, root canal treatment is often the next step to restore it.
In rare cases, which usually only occur if the tooth is handled incorrectly or left out too long, it may not be possible to reinsert it, and an implant would be necessary.
Root Fractures
Dental trauma can also result in horizontal fractures in the tooth root. The closer to the tooth tip the fracture occurs, the better the chances for successful treatment. A root that isn’t severed by the fracture also has a better chance of recovery.
Sometimes the tooth can be stabilized with a splint, but again, root canal treatment will be necessary if the pulp is damaged.
