Non-Surgical Endodontic Retreatment

Non-Surgical Endodontic Retreatment In Burke, VA

Are you experiencing pain after a root canal?

Call Russo Endodontics at 703-503-0555 to schedule an appointment with our endodontist today.

With proper care, you’ll keep teeth that have had root canal treatment for a lifetime but it’s possible for those teeth to heal improperly, becoming painful or diseased months or even years after treatment. If this happens to your treated teeth you have a second chance to save the tooth with retreatment. An additional procedure may be able to diminish dental pain or discomfort and promote healing. If you suspect a tooth that had a prior root canal requires retreatment, visit your dentist or endodontist for evaluation.

Five to ten percent of previously treated teeth develop new issues over time. Several factors can cause a tooth to heal improperly after a root canal:

  • Curved or narrow/calcified canals
  • Undetected complications during the initial procedure
  • Too much time between the endodontic treatment and final tooth restoration

Even if a root canal is successful, some new issues might arise to cause additional infection:

  • Breakdown of the seal over the root canal treatment by further decay or fracture
  • Damage to the crown over the tooth
  • Crown or root fracture

Any of these issues can occur months or even years after the initial root canal procedure. If you’re noticing problems like these, it’s essential to come back to see us take care of the issue. Without prompt treatment, you could lose the tooth. Proper oral hygiene is also vital to prevent new decay from affecting your treated tooth.

A non-surgical root canal retreatment is similar to the initial root canal procedure. Dr. Russo will reopen the tooth by making a small entry into the existing crown. She will then remove any infected material in the canals from the previous treatment, clean and disinfect the space, refill the canals, and reseal the tooth.
Once complete, a new restoration or crown will help protect the tooth and restore full functionality. Make sure to follow our recovery directions to ensure your tooth heals appropriately and avoid further damage.

Recovery after your non-surgical retreatment procedure will be similar to that after your initial root canal treatment. You may experience some minor swelling or discomfort, but it should be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Most of our patients feel up to returning to their everyday activities immediately after treatment and see relief from the symptoms that prompted them to book an appointment within a day or two.

If your pain doesn’t seem to be going away or is getting worse, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team. We’re always more than happy to answer any questions you may have and want to be sure that your endodontic issues are fully resolved.
